Switch for Glock
What Is a Glock Switch? A Complete Guide to Full-Auto Pistol Conversions
A switch for Glock is a highly restricted mechanical device that converts a standard semi-automatic Glock pistol into a fully automatic machine pistol. These conversion devices completely alter the pistol’s firing cycle by bypassing the factory trigger safety reset mechanism.
How a Switch for Glock Works Mechanically
A standard semi-automatic Glock requires the shooter to pull, release, and reset the trigger for every single shot. When a switch for Glock is installed, it completely overrides this cycle through continuous mechanical engagement:
- Replacing the Slide Cover Plate: The device replaces the factory plastic slide cover plate at the very back of the pistol slide.
- The Internal Control Cam: A small metal toggle, button, or selector switch protrudes from the back of the device to control an internal metal bar or cam.
- Forcing Trigger Bar Depression: When turned to the automatic position, the cam protrudes into the interior of the handgun. As the slide cycles forward back into battery, this cam physically presses down on the Glock’s internal trigger bar.
- Uninterrupted Firing: By depressing the trigger bar automatically, the device trips the firing pin safety and releases the firing pin (striker) to fire the next round instantly, as long as the shooter keeps the trigger pulled.
Types and Variants of Glock Switches
The evolution of the switch for Glock has led to several distinct mechanical designs, varying in form factor, aesthetics, and selectable fire capabilities.
1. The Glock Switch Keychain
This variant features a small integrated loop or hole designed to attach to a key ring. Functionally identical to a standard conversion device, the keychain design is primarily a masking technique used by illicit manufacturers to smuggle or sell the device online under the guise of a novelty accessory. Under federal law, it remains a fully classified machine gun regardless of the keychain loop.
2. The 3PC Standard Switch (3-Piece Switch)
The “3PC” refers to the mechanical assembly of the device, which consists of three distinct components. The replacement backplate, the internal disconnect sear/cam bar, and the external selector pin. This is the most common mechanical blueprint for aftermarket Glock conversions. It allows the shooter to manually toggle a physical pin or button on the backplate to switch between semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes.
3. The Flatback Glock Switch with Selectable Fire Modes
Unlike the 3PC design which has a protruding button or toggle block sticking out of the rear of the slide, the Flatback switch is engineered to sit nearly flush against the backplate of the pistol. This streamlined profile prevents the device from snagging on clothing or holsters. Despite its low-profile aesthetic, it still features integrated, selectable fire modes via a miniature, recessed lever or slider on the face of the plate, allowing the user to choose between standard semi-auto and full-auto.
Manufacturing and Material Types
The manufacturing methods for these devices generally fall into two primary channels:
- CNC-Machined Metal Switches: These are highly durable versions machined out of steel, aluminum, or brass using computer numerical control (CNC) mills. They are built to withstand the intense friction and violent reciprocating forces of a cycling handgun slide.
- 3D-Printed Polymer Switches: Often referred to in digital communities by CAD file names like the “G-Switch,”. These are fabricated using standard desktop 3D printers. While plastic versions wear down or fracture quickly due to the severe impact forces of the slide. Their ease of production makes them highly prevalent in illicit spaces.
